Justice League is the third DCEU film directed by Zack Snyder, and forms a rough trilogy with his first two, Man of Steel and Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice. In this entry, Batman (Ben Affleck) and Wonder Woman (Gal Gadot) must team up with new heroes Cyborg (Ray Fisher), Aquaman (Jason Momoa) and the Flash (Ezra Miller) to stop an invasion by the evil alien space god Steppenwolf (Ciarán Hinds).
Snyder’s first two entries were already divisive due to their dour tone and convoluted plots; however, due to the untimely death of his daughter, he left the project halfway through and was replaced by colleague Joss Whedon. He was tasked with doing some hefty reshoots, and his style proved so different from Snyder’s that the film wound up a bit of a confused mess. That, plus the already low audience interest, resulted in a film that barely made back its massive $300 million budget.
Many fans have been calling for a “Snyder cut,” allowing the director to edit the film according to his vision. Some say that this probably is not even possible, given how much work there was to do when he left. Nevertheless, the deleted scenes in this Blu-Ray should at least provide a hint of his original intentions.
The thirty-second video does not do much more than give a quick compilation of some of the movie’s more iconic scenes, including ones used for the trailers. However, after announcing the inclusion of new scenes, we see a brief part that seems to have Superman (Henry Cavill) entering the Fortress of Solitude, in a filmmaking style that seems to imply it was one of Zack Snyder’s cut scenes.
Some have noted that this fixes one of smaller plot holes from the film: why Superman is wearing a pristine outfit for the final battle, when the suit that he was buried in was horribly torn by Doomsday’s killing blow. If as assume that Superman stops by his secret base after that farm scene with Lois, we can just assume he got his back-up clothes there.
The film will be available for digital download on February 13 and Blu-Ray on March 13.
