Alex Pall and Drew Taggart of The Chainsmokers Take Three of Six Wins at iHeartRadio Awards 2018

The Chainsmokers scored several nominations at the 2018 iHeartRadio Music Awards and walked away with three big wins. Alex Pall and Andrew Taggart took home the award for Dance Artist of the Year, edging out fellow nominees Calvin Harris, Kygo, Cheat Codes, and Zedd. The duo also emerged victorious in the Best Collaboration category for their single with Coldplay, “Something Just Like This.” The Chainsmokers rounded out their hat-trick with a Best Dance Album of the year for Memories…Do Not Open. This album was the duo’s debut full-length album and features hits like “Something Just Like This” and “Paris.”

The iHeartRadio Awards were held on March 11, 2018, from The Forum in Inglewood, California. DJ Khaled and Hailey Baldwin hosted the awards this year.

The Chainsmokers accepted the Best Collaboration Award on stage in coordinating geometric-patterned sweatshirts. After a very social walk to the stage during which they personally connected with other stars in the audience including Chance the Rapper, Alex Pall let his bandmate speak for both of them during the acceptance speech.

“First of all, we gotta give a massive shout out to Coldplay. Coldplay was and is one of our biggest influences and being able to work with a group like that is something that we never thought would ever happen. And we learned so much from the process of working with them about your own musical identity, how to grow into yourself, about what songs mean for the world. So, shout out to Chris and the band; shout out to iHeartRadio for always supporting us; shout out to Columbia [Records]. Thank you, [and] shout out to our fans for voting for this.”

The Chainsmokers also presented an award for the Best New Artist to Cardi B, “passing the torch” as Alex Pall put it.

The Chainsmokers had an impressive 12 nominations at last year’s show and went home with five including Best New Artist. They performed twice on that show as well playing “Something Just Like This” with Chris Martin of Coldplay and their mega-hit “Paris.”

The Chainsmokers are Hit Machines

The iHeartRadio Awards pile on top of several other big career wins for The Chainsmokers. In 2016 they won Favorite Electronic Dance Music Artist at the 2016 AMAs and topped the Billboard Hot Hundred charts with three quadruple-platinum hits including “Don’t Let Me Down,” “Roses,” and their record-breaking “Closer” (ft. Halsey).

The hits continued in 2017 with the release of Memories…Do Not Open, which debuted at #1 on the Billboard 200. The duo secured three Grammy Award nominations for Best Dance Recording, Best New Artist, and Best Pop/Duo Performance, and took the prize in the Best Dance Recording category.

The journey has been nothing but up since The Chainsmokers’ initial breakthrough in 2014. The duo released their first album, Bouquet, on February 5, 2016.

The Chainsmokers’ Evolving Sound

Rather than churning out songs that mimic their previously successful formula, The Chainsmokers are trying new things as their singles trickle steadily from the vault. The latest releases like “Sick Boy” and “You Owe Me” show off a different side of the duo. At times moody and sarcastic and other times sugary sweet, The Chainsmokers are showing real diversity while maintaining their mainstream appeal.

The multi-platinum EDM duo is beginning an Asian and European tour. They’re also performing at the XS Nightclub and Encore Beach Club at the Wynn resort for a number of dates that make up a 3-year residency at the two clubs. These are the band’s only US club dates for the foreseeable future, although you can catch them at a couple of festivals this summer as well.

New Music Friday Brings a Song Release?

In other Chainsmokers’ news, new music is coming. The official Twitter account teased on March 12th that a new song drops Friday, March 16th. Just in time to rage to for St. Patrick’s Day.

Fans who want access as soon as the song hits the internet can sign up for notifications linked in the post shared by the band.

That wasn’t enough of a teaser for Alex Pall and Drew Taggart, however. Historically they have used social media to make a splash, so another tweet soon followed the initial mention.

In the 2:20 long video, a hooded figure that appears to be Taggart stands on a stage before a backdrop of glowing phones held high in the air. Booming low-end rumbles reverberate in the background- the only hint of the ‘music’ The Chainsmokers reveal. The tension is palpable as we wait to hear more.

This release follows “You Owe Me,” a poppy song that hints at insolent isolation. The Chainsmokers released “You Owe Me” on February 16, 2018.

There is serious excitement coming from the fans while they wait for the new song.

Will what’s coming dislodge “Sick Boy” from our collective heads? We’ll have to wait and see.
