Fans have reason to expect that next year’s Captain Marvel will be a big movie, given its place in the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s lineup, but a new rumor says that it could be even more momentous than Avengers: Infinity War.
The unidentified source, cited by ScreenGeek.net, also compared it to Thor: Ragnarok and Black Panther, as well as Wonder Woman, which was made by the rival DC Extended Universe. They said that while that movie is seen as a major step for women, “Captain Marvel is going to blow it away.”
“Nothing is going to be as different and original as Captain Marvel. The upcoming movie from Anna Bolden and Ryan Fleck is going to change the Marvel Cinematic Universe and give us something no one has seen before–and something that no fan is expecting,” they promised.
That’s a bold claim, especially as fans are still reeling from the shocking ending of Avengers: Infinity War, which is set to be followed up by the fourth Avengers movie next year. Nevertheless, fans expect that Captain Marvel will somehow tie into that upcoming movie; the fact that the powers that be chose to set it between their two epic blockbusters implies that it somehow bridges them in a way not yet determined.
The comparison to Wonder Woman, as well as Black Panther, is interesting. These were the first truly successful superhero movies to have a female and a black lead, respectively, and are thus widely celebrated. Captain Marvel will be the first female-led MCU film, but no matter how well-done, it will be hard to top what director Patty Jenkins and actress Gal Gadot did with the Maid of Might over at Warner Bros.
Despite its placement in the line-up, Captain Marvel will be set during the 1990s, and will be based on the Kree-Skrull War from the comics. The Skrulls, incidentally, are shapeshifters who often wind up taking the forms of important Marvel Comics characters, so it is possible that the film will set up some shocking revelations as [insert character here] is revealed to have been a fake this whole time.
Fans will have to wait until March 8, 2019 to find out if this movie is really this epic.
