Margot Robbie has reportedly claimed that Birds of Prey will be the next DC Extended Universe entry after Wonder Woman 1984, and while this is not confirmed, she already seems willing to drop other hints about the project.
The actress premiered in Suicide Squad as Harley Quinn, a loopy clown-themed villainess who has a romantic history with the Joker (Jared Leto). She will apparently be a major character in Birds of Prey, which focuses on an all-female superhero team traditionally consisting of Barbara Gordon (Batgirl), Helena Bertinelli (Huntress) and Dinah Lance (Black Canary).
In the comics, the team is tied fairly close to the Batman mythos, and similarly tends to focus on street-level crime. Perhaps because of this, Robbie claims that the film will be rated R and have a “much smaller budget” than other DCEU fare. This can draw some similarities to recent X-Men films like Logan and Deadpool, and implies that, while the next year’s worth of DCEU films are more lighthearted, the franchise may be diversifying its stock with all sorts of superhero stories.
Speaking of diversification, Robbie said that this would be an important consideration when it comes to casting, opining “Real life isn’t so one specific image. We’ve got to reflect that onscreen.” All of the main Birds of Prey characters are traditionally Caucasian, though Huntress has been drawn more racially ambiguous since the New 52 reboot.
Given that the DCEU already has Aquaman played by Jason Momoa, it would not be surprising to see her, and/or other characters, played by actresses of various ethnicities. Note also that the movie will be directed by Cathy Yan, who was born in China and raised in both Hong Kong and America.
In one more note, Robbie said that Harley will have a new costume in the film. The character has had a variety of outfits in the comics and other media, and some have criticized versions, such as Suicide Squad‘s, that are scanty but otherwise normal clothing. Unfortunately, we probably will not get to see her in the classic jester outfit that she briefly donned in that movie—it makes it hard to move, especially in action scenes.
For now we await more news about this film, including confirmation about its filming.
