Earlier this week, Netflix announced the release date for their upcoming horror series Chilling Adventures of Sabrina, a show based on the Archie Comics series of the same name. Chilling Adventures of Sabrina will premiere on October 26, just in time for Halloween. The series stars Kiernan Shipka as Sabrina Spellman, a young witch just learning to use her powers. While the series shares the same characters as the iconic 90s comedy series, it will embrace far darker themes than the earlier series. The comic series Chilling Adventures of Sabrina is one of the most celebrated horror comics in recent years, featuring themes that include revenge, immortality, and devil worship. Speaking to reporters, Shipka likened the series to classic horror films such as Rosemary’s Baby and The Exorcist. Shipka added, “It’s going to be really dark and really cool and have this very like macabre take on everything.”
While fans are eagerly awaiting a trailer for the show, the cast frequently posts behind the scenes pictures to give fans an idea of what the series will look like. In a recent photo Shipka posted on Instagram, Sabrina sits in a red pickup truck with her boyfriend Harvey Kinkle, played in the show by Ross Lynch. Chilling Adventures of Sabrina was originally intended to be a spinoff series of Riverdale, the popular teen drama on The CW. While both shows are executive produced by Archie Comics chief creative officer Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa, the shows will take place in two different fictional universes. Speaking on if the shows would ever crossover, Riverdale star Lili Reinhart said that it would be highly unlikely. Reinhart, who plays Betty Cooper in the series, said that Riverdale is a more grounded, realistic series, while Chilling Adventures of Sabrina tells stories set in the supernatural.
It is also unclear how closely the Netflix adaptation of Chilling Adventures of Sabrina will follow the comic series. The Netflix version already has two new villains that were not introduced in the comic series. Richard Coyle plays Father Blackwood, leader of the coven known as the Church of Night. Those close to the production say that Blackwood will be an oppressive force as Sabrina comes into her training in the supernatural. Meanwhile, Bronson Pinchot plays George Hawthorne, the puritanical principal of Sabrina’s high school and her constant nemesis.
