TransUnion’s New Chief Legal Officer Heather Russell

Since graduating with honors from the College of William & Mary in 1993 with a BA in English and Biology and with honors from the American University, Washington College of Law in Washington, D.C., Heather Russell has been a legal executive in a plethora of global financial services sectors. Her experience includes consumer financial services, data privacy and security, regulatory compliance, mergers and acquisitions, and FinTech, and now she continues on with her executive positions as the Chief Legal Officer of TransUnion.

Heather Russell has been recognized by many for her accomplishments. In 2014, she was named by Inside Counsel Magazine as the Next Generation of Female General Counsel. In 2015, she was the recipient of the International Financial Law Review Women in Business Law In-House Award. In 2017, was recognized by Legal 500 for Financial Services Regulatory Practice. Russell is frequently a speaker at global industry events.

Besides her accomplishments and executive business experience, Heather Russell is also a member of many professional associations. These associations include the New York Bar, Washington D.C. Bar, Six Sigma Green Belt Certification, Exchequer Club, Banking Law Committee of the New York City Bar Association, and the National Women’s Law Center Advisory Board. In addition to being a member, Russell is also a vice-chair for the Banking Law Committee of the American Bar Association and a faculty member for the Salzburg Global Seminar Forum on Finance in a Changing World.

As for her new role as Chief Legal Officer, Heather Russell will be responsible for all legal, government relations, corporate governance and compliance, and consumer privacy functions of TransUnion and its subsidiaries. Furthermore, she will serve on TransUnion’s Executive Committee. She will be reporting directly to TransUnion’s President and Chief Executive Officer Jim Peck.

The previous positions that Heather Russell has filled that will now help her in her new position as Chief Legal Officer of TransUnion include her most recent position as leader of financial institutions regulation, supervision and fintech practices at the law firm of Buckley Sandler, LLP, and her other previous positions as Executive Vice President, Chief Legal Officer and Corporate Secretary at Fifth Third Bank, Managing Director and Head of Public Policy and Regulatory Affairs at Bank of New York Mellon, and Senior Vice President and Associate General Counsel at Bank of America.

The news of Heather Russell’s appointment to Chief Legal Officer comes after the announcement of John Blenke’s retirement from the position at TransUnion.
