Liverpool’s back has been ruled from the rest of the squad’s tour to the United States after he incurred a muscle injury. The player is expected to make a trip to Merseyside so that he can undergo therapy on his thigh injury that he sustained when Liverpool played against Borussia Dortmund. The defender was substituted just 22 minutes during the match that Liverpool lost 3-1. The gap that he left behind was too massive for the rest of the backline to cover. The space left saw Van Dijk try to fill the massive gap as the only experienced defender. Joel Matip had only returned into action after he underwent surgery because of an injury that he sustained during the 2017/2018 premier league season. His campaign for the champion’s league was also cut short because of the injury.
Liverpool’s head coach Jürgen Klopp dismissed the claim that Joel Matip’s muscle strain was related to the injury that kept him off during last season’s UEFA Champions League campaign. The player never played the Champions League finals. However, he showed signs of a quick recovery that later appeared to have prolonged. The manager confirmed to the press that it was another muscle. He noted that Matip suffered a minor muscle tear. Klopp went on to say that he will soon recover and report back to the pitch before the season begins. Jürgen stated that Joel Matip would have to travel back to Merseyside so that he could undergo therapy and treatment for the muscle to recover.
Liverpool posted Joel Matip injury report on Liverpool’s website where Klopp said that the defender incurred the injury during the first half of their match against the German side Borussia Dortmund on Sunday. The Liverpool team was participating in the Champions Cup fixture. After the ordeal, the defender was immediately substituted.
The injury that Joel Matip sustained was on his upper thigh. However, it was then not viewed as a long-term injury. However, this meant that Joel Matip would not be available for selection in the remaining two matches that will be played in America. Matip will receive his muscle recovery at Melwood. Matip’s last appearance was in March where he featured in the game between Liverpool and Crystal Palace. It’s in this game that the Cameroon center-back sustained the Injury. The defender made a debut after his injury in a match that Liverpool played against Bury in July 14th. The Reds managed to win the game 2-0.
