The Clemson Tigers are the 2019 national champions! The Tigers did something on Monday evening that has not been done in over a decade – that is totally dismantle a Nick Saban led Alabama team. It wasn’t a shock that the Tigers won the game, however, it was stunning that they made it look so easy.
Clemson quarterback Trevor Lawrence passed for 347 yards and three touchdowns as the Tigers defeated Alabama 44-16 to claim their third NCAA title in school history and second in three years under head coach Dabo Swinney.
According to CBS Sports, in an unprecedented fourth consecutive playoff meeting between Clemson and Alabama, and the third in four seasons to decide the national championship, Clemson dominated this game from start to finish.
With freshman quarterback Trevor Lawrence looking like a seasoned veteran, and a defense that gave the Crimson Tide no breathing room, the Tigers closed the 2018-19 season with a perfect 15-0 record – and no doubt will be the preseason No. 1 team in the land next fall.
As for Alabama, this one has to hurt. It is hard to feel compassion for a team that has literally dominated their sport for the past decade and has won eighty percent of their games during that period. However, Alabama coach Nick Saban was hoping to cement his legacy by leading the Tide to their sixth national championship in the past 10 years.
Is the dynasty run over for the Tide? Not by a long shot.
With another strong recruiting class coming in this fall, and Nick Saban thinking about being just 60 minutes away from a championship that he let slip away, Alabama will be back in 2019 with a new fire lit under them.
In fact, the way these two teams have dominated the sport over the past five seasons, don’t be surprised if we see the fourth meeting between these two schools to decide a national championship next season as well.
