Coming off the great success of Aquaman and Shazam!, DC Entertainment and Warner Bros. is looking to relaunch the Caped Crusader in Matt Reeves’s upcoming film The Batman. A new description of the film in The Hollywood Reporter sheds more light on the secretive project. According to the entertainment news magazine, The Batman will feature an entirely new take on the Dark Knight. Specifically, the report claims that the film does not focus on Batman’s origin or feature him as a more seasoned crimefighter. Rather, the film will see the Caped Crusader still very early on in his career as he hones his detective skills.

As fans of the character know, in the comics, Batman is one of the most intelligent individuals in the DC universe. The intellect of Batman and his alter ego, Bruce Wayne, rivals that of Lex Luthor, the iconic mad scientist and industrialist who frequently clashes with Superman. This aspect of the character has never been touched upon on the big screen before, with most filmmakers opting to portray Batman as a brawler and action hero. Much of the story from 2005’s Batman Begins and Zach Snyder’s Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice, showed Wayne turning his body into a living weapon to fight criminals and not so much of a focus on his epithet as the world’s greatest detective.

The Hollywood Reporter also shed more light on the casting of actor Robert Pattinson as Batman/Wayne. The magazine claims that while reports of Pattinson landing the role began leaking on May 17, the actor wasn’t actually offered the part until May 30. While Pattinson was the studio’s favorite to play the iconic superhero, Reeves and executives producing the film wanted to see the actor in a Batsuit before officially offering him the role. After Pattinson filmed a few audition tapes in the classic costume, Reeves and studio executives deliberated for several days before making a decision. In addition to liking how Pattinson looked in the Batsuit, executives were persuaded to offer the actor the role because they had faith in his ability to carry the Batman franchise into the future. The Batman is rumored to be the first part of a trilogy of films focusing on the character.

The Batman will start filming early next year with a scheduled release date of June 25, 2021.
