Should Abraham Start as England’s Front in the Upcoming Qualifiers?

Many skeptics say Tammy Abraham, the 22-year-old Chelsea striker, is not good enough to start for the three lions. However, after his red-hot start to the season as Chelsea’s first-choice striker, the youngster has earned his spot in the England squad for the upcoming Euro 2020 qualifiers. England plays the Czech Republic and Bulgaria. The first of these encounters happens tonight as Gareth Southgate leads his team to Prague to face the Czech Republic. Mason Mount, Abraham’s club mate, is also rumored to be making his full international debut. Abraham is, however, unlikely to start as his teammate Harry Kane looks like the likely option for the lone central striker role. Harry Kane has in the past won the coveted Golden Boot in the English Premiere League.

Abraham has been in better form than Harry Kane this season. The Tottenham forward is well known for his ability to score at both club and international matches. He is undoubtedly a better forward than his younger teammates. However, on current form basis, the Tottenham goal-machine has not been at his best this season. Considering Southgate’s statements about picking players in form to represent England, Abraham should then be starting for the three lions tonight. It has been rumored that Tammy Abram is not committed to an International future playing for England. Should this be the case, Southgate should be looking to lock down the young talent in England.

Abraham recently talked about being undecided between playing for England or Nigeria at the International level.
Abraham could still represent Nigeria in international matches since he has only played friendly matches for England. Should he make an appearance in tonight’s game, that seals his fate. In the meanwhile, Harry Kane remains England’s first-choice attacker. However, if Abraham decides to play for Nigeria at the international level and continues to play in his current form, England will be shooting themselves in the foot by placing him in the first eleven.

Abraham is exactly the type of striker England needs right now. He is young, hungry for the ball, and can only get better with more experience. Abraham is currently joint top goal-scorer in the English Premier League with Manchester City’s Sergio Aguero. If he were to play in the upcoming Euro qualifiers, he would improve the odds of England finishing top of group A. There is no doubt that Abraham’s chance at the international stage will come. Hopefully, for the bright prospect, he takes it as he has done in his club team.
