Movie fans around the world have lost another blockbuster. This is because Universal Pictures has officially announced that “Fast and the Furious 9” has been delayed until April of 2021. This is not surprising that the film was delayed as a result of the fear caused by the coronavirus. However, there was shock from fans when they learned how long they would need to wait to see the latest installment of the popular franchise. Universal clearly believes this film will be another massive hit like many of the other movies have been. They want to wait to release it when the world is back to normal.
Pushing back the film will be a big hit financially for Universal. However, releasing it now is not an option. The film would make a fraction of what it would if it were released without a global pandemic in progress. The studio has way too much money invested in the film to put it out and risk it flopping because people are too scared to go to the local movie theater to watch it. The thing that really hurts Universal is the fact that they already spent millions of dollars promoting a film that will not be in theaters for another year.
There are many other major Hollywood releases that have been pushed back as well. “No Time to Die” is the latest installment in the James Bond franchise. Fans will need to wait until November to watch the film after it was delayed by seven months. Disney has also delayed “Mulan.” However, the studio has not decided on an exact release date for the film yet. It could be a long time until “Mulan” hits theaters. Disney is hoping to make a lot of money with the film in China. However, it will be a long time until people are going to movie theaters again in China.
Two days before Universal officially announced that “Fast and the Furious 9” would be delayed until next year, Vin Diesel said that he did not want the film release to be delayed. He said that it will come out on the scheduled date. He believes that people need movies now more than ever to divert their attention away from the madness around them. Obviously, Vin Diesel does not make the big decisions at Universal because the studio quickly pushed the film back against the actor’s wishes.
