Coronavirus Causes NBA Season to Be Suspended

There have been many individual sporting events that have been cancelled or postponed as a result of the coronavirus global pandemic. However, the National Basketball Association has taken the very drastic step of suspending their season until a time when they feel it will be safe for the fans to gather in large numbers. The suspension of the NBA season was a direct result of a player on the Utah Jazz testing positive for the coronavirus. Once that happened, all of the NBA owners had an emergency meeting to decide what to do for the rest of the season. The decision was ultimately made to immediately suspend the season to reduce the chance of other players being infected.

Dallas Mavericks owner Mark Cuban has said that he is putting together a plan that will pay the hourly employees of the arena until the NBA season gets started again. These employees depend on the income they receive during the season while games are being played. Therefore, Mark Cuban said that it is a priority of his to make sure the people who work in his arena are taken care of during this very difficult time for the league. There is no telling when the NBA will play games again. It is very possible that the rest of this season gets wiped out.

The NBA released a statement that said they are going to monitor the coronavirus situation very carefully and make their decisions based on the status of the outbreak. Before the season was officially suspended, there was talk of playing games in empty arenas. However, the reaction to that idea was not very good from players. LeBron James of the Los Angeles Lakers said that he would not play unless fans were at the games. However, he later changed his mind about that. The NBA generates billions of dollars. TV networks have paid a lot of money to broadcast games that are not going to be played. Companies will need to be reimbursed for commercials they already paid for on those games. The suspension of the season will cause the NBA to lose a lot of money. However, it will survive. Major League Baseball has its season set to begin on the 26th of this month. It is not known at this time if their season will carry on as scheduled. As of this time, no baseball games have been cancelled.
